Finding the Perfect Suit

Many moms of brides-to-be are choosing a mother of the bride pant suit over a traditional dress.  This is because pantsuits are classy and comfortable, and, after all, the mother of the bride has plenty of work to do at the wedding.  Whether mom chooses a pantsuit or dress, there are some rules and traditions to follow when choosing mother of the bride formal wear.  Mother of the bride pantsuits are available at many fashionable retailers, but many mothers still wonder what is appropriate for mother of the bride attire.

Choosing a Color

Mother of the bride attire is sometimes confusing.  Many moms wonder first about the color they should wear.  Should they try to match the bridesmaids’ dresses, or contrast with them?  Should they be concerned with the suit worn by the mother of the groom?  Answering these questions is the first step to choosing from the many mother of the bride pantsuits out there today.

The only cut-and-dried rule about the color of the mother of the bride pant suit or dress is that it should absolutely not be white.  Any dress or suit that looks like it could be a wedding dress is considered tacky.  Also, since black is sometimes considered a bad luck color, consider finding mother of the bride formal attire in another color, or ask the bride first.

As far as whether or not to match the bridesmaids’ dresses, that is likely a question to ask the bride.  You may want to consider a slightly lighter or darker shade or a completely different color.  The same goes with the mother of the groom’s dress.  Just remember that you will all be together for pictures, so try to choose something that will contrast well.  Chicago Bride has some excellent advice about choosing a color at this link: http://www.chicagobridal.com/fashion/mothers/basics.asp.

Get the Bride’s Opinion

Don’t forget that a wedding is all about the bride, your daughter.  Be sure to ask her opinion about which mother of the bride pantsuits she prefers.  Mother of the bride clothes should not, however, make you look hideous.  If you cannot stand a suggestion your daughter makes about your mother of the bride suit, ask her gently if you could choose something else.  However, do not make your mother of the bride dress suit the source of a major argument.  It’s not worth it in light of all that has to be done for a wedding.  Read some suggestions about how to deal with a picky bride here: http://www.vibride.com/article369.html.

In the end, you want to be comfortable and fashionable in your mother of the bride pant suit.  Choose something you like that looks good on you and matches the colors of the day well.  Who knows, you just might end up wearing it again!
